The Department of Justice (DOJ) plans to formally take responsibility for protecting witnesses involved in the flood control scandal who are currently under Senate custody. DOJ officials say they need greater access to witnesses and documents to strengthen their investigation but face limitations under current arrangements. Senate leaders expressed willingness to cooperate as long as whistleblowers provide credible evidence. Meanwhile, the DOJ has secured six freeze orders targeting officials and contractors linked to the scandal but has yet to freeze politicians’ assets, fueling public impatience. The Witness Protection Program is also seeking a budget increase to support its expanded role in safeguarding these key witnesses.
