DICT, DOST CAUTION THE PUBLIC AGAINST USING AI CHATBOTS

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) have warned Filipino netizens to exercise caution when interacting with artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, particularly in light of recent disruptions caused by a Chinese AI startup, DeepSeek.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy emphasized the importance of being discerning when sharing personal data with AI platforms, as this information could be harvested and used without users’ control.

DeepSeek’s launch of its DeepSeek-R1 large language model disrupted global markets, with significant impacts on tech giants like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon.

Uy also highlighted that data is the “fuel” of AI, making it crucial for users to limit the amount of personal data they share to avoid contributing to AI’s intelligence beyond their control.

Additionally, the DOST raised concerns about potential geopolitical biases in DeepSeek’s AI model, noting that early evaluations show limitations in its ability to respond to sensitive queries about Chinese leadership and the West Philippine Sea.
