DEPED RAMPS UP EFFORTS TO RESTORE LEARNING IN QUAKE-HIT AREAS

The Department of Education (DepEd) is working with local governments to accelerate the recovery of around 5,000 schools affected by recent earthquakes, focusing on safe learning spaces, psychosocial support, and facility rehabilitation.

Secretary Sonny Angara directed regional offices to coordinate closely with LGUs, while DepEd introduced the M7X Ready Framework and the Guidebook on Safer Learning Facilities to strengthen earthquake preparedness.

Partnerships with DOST and PHIVOLCS aim to implement multi-hazard planning tools and a potential sensor network to monitor earthquake impact in real time.

In affected regions like Davao and Cebu, DepEd teams provided cleanup, minor repairs, psychosocial support, and alternative learning delivery modes to ensure continuity of education.

Meanwhile, Senator Bam Aquino urged President Marcos to certify as urgent the Classroom-Building Acceleration Program bill, which would allow LGUs and NGOs to directly construct classrooms to address the country’s backlog.
