DENR HALTS CEBU LANDFILL OPERATIONS AFTER DEADLY LANDSLIDE

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has ordered Prime Integrated Waste Solutions Inc. (PIWSI) to suspend operations at the Cebu City landfill following a deadly landslide on January 8 that killed eight people and left 28 others missing.

The collapse at the Barangay Binaliw landfill buried a materials recovery facility and staff housing, prompting the cease-and-desist order under a 2007 Environmental Management Bureau memorandum.

While operations are halted, PIWSI is required to continue rescue, retrieval, and cleanup efforts alongside government agencies.

Local officials had previously flagged safety issues, including towering garbage heaps and poor waste management, at the 20-hectare facility that processes 1,000 tons of waste daily.

The DENR said it will coordinate with local governments to assess and strengthen solid waste management and enforce environmental regulations in the city.
