DAVAO OFFICIAL FACES CHARGES OVER FAKE BIRTH CERTIFICATE SCANDAL

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has filed charges against four employees of the Sta. Cruz municipal civil registrar in Davao del Sur for allegedly issuing fake birth certificates to Chinese nationals.

The charges include falsification of public documents, graft, corruption, perjury, and violations of the Registry of Civil Status.

The NBI’s investigation revealed that between 2016 and 2023, at least 1,576 fake birth certificates were issued through late registration.

In addition to the civil registrar employees, charges were also filed against seven Chinese nationals who fraudulently registered their addresses in Sta. Cruz.

The investigation, which uncovered the fraudulent activities in July 2024, also suggests the involvement of local government units, though the NBI has not yet identified them.
