The Department of Agriculture (DA) is encouraging rice farmers in the Visayas to explore corn production to help increase the country’s supply.
DA-National Corn Program Director Milo delos Reyes said farmers could plant rice and then follow with corn as a second crop.
Corn production in the Visayas remains low except in Cebu, with only 47,000 hectares planted in Western Visayas.
The DA is promoting corn farming in areas with limited irrigation since corn requires less water, especially during summer.
The 18th National Corn Congress-Visayas Cluster also emphasized adopting modern technologies to boost corn production.
