CIVIC GROUPS PETITION SC TO MANDATE ANTI-POLITICAL DYNASTY LAW

A coalition of civic organizations, led by 1Sambayan, filed a petition with the Supreme Court urging Congress to pass the long-awaited Anti-Political Dynasty Law.

The petition seeks to hold Congress accountable for not implementing the constitutional mandate in Article II, Section 26 of the 1987 Constitution, which prohibits political dynasties.

Despite over 30 bills introduced on the matter, none have passed into law, perpetuating inequalities, the petitioners argue.

The petition calls on the SC to compel Congress to enact the law within a year or face contempt charges.

Notable figures like former Comelec chair Christian Monsod have supported the petition, citing the growing political entrenchment in the country.
