A garbage landslide at Cebu’s Binaliw Landfill on January 8 collapsed a materials recovery facility and nearby staff housing, killing one, injuring 12, and leaving 38 missing.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with 333 personnel, ambulances, and fire trucks deployed to locate those trapped under debris.
Seven of the injured are hospitalized at Visayas Medical Center, while five are at NorthGen Hospital, and authorities continue verifying casualties.
Cebu City officials said the landslide may have been caused by unsafe landfill conditions, including soil mining and excessive garbage piling.
The city government is coordinating with the DENR and the landfill operator to provide support, investigate violations, and improve waste management practices.
