The Kalayaan Island Group LGU has urged Senate President Tito Sotto to expunge Sen. Rodante Marcoleta’s remarks suggesting the Philippines should give up the islands from official records.
Marcoleta’s statement, which he later backpedaled on, drew sharp criticism for being “defeatist” amid ongoing territorial disputes.
The LGU passed a resolution formally protesting the remarks, expressing “vigorous indignation.”
Senate President Pro Tempore Ping Lacson supported the resolution but noted that a formal motion is required to strike the statement from the Commission on Appointments records.
Lacson stressed that leaving such remarks on record could weaken the country’s stance in the West Philippine Sea disputes.
