Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro emphasized that hosting ASEAN meetings is vital for both the Philippines and the region, especially with the ongoing development of a South China Sea Code of Conduct.
She described ASEAN as a central pillar of the country’s foreign policy, noting that the Philippines’ role as chair—held only once every decade—allows it to help shape key regional decisions.
Lazaro highlighted that economic, political, and socio-cultural discussions within ASEAN are critical as the region faces global uncertainties and complex challenges.
Her remarks come amid proposals to postpone the summit and reallocate its estimated PHP17 billion budget to address economic impacts of Middle East tensions.
However, Lazaro said the final decision rests with the Office of the President, as the Philippines prepares to host around 650 ASEAN-related meetings, including major summits scheduled throughout 2026.
