Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said seven to eight criminal cases linked to anomalous flood control projects will be filed with the Sandiganbayan by next month, including charges of malversation of public funds and falsification.
The cases involve P289.5 million in projects in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, with evidence provided by the Independent Commission for Infrastructure, which recommended charges against 18 officials.
Some lawmakers involved, dubbed “cong-tractors,” have expressed willingness to return ill-gotten funds, potentially allowing for plea bargains, while others may face full trial.
The Department of Justice is set to complete its investigation into five “ghost” flood control projects within a month, with state witness eligibility tied to the restitution of stolen funds.
Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla inspected Pasay City Jail to ensure it can house accused officials under proper detention conditions if convicted.
