President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the release of 17 Filipino seafarers captured by Houthi rebels in Yemen in November 2023, alongside their fellow crewmembers of the M/V Galaxy Leader.
The mariners are now under the care of the Philippine Embassy in Muscat, Oman, and are set to reunite with their families in the Philippines soon.
The President expressed gratitude to Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for mediating the release and commended Philippine agencies for their tireless efforts over the past 429 days.
He highlighted the importance of Republic Act 12021, the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, which aims to protect seafarers’ rights and promote equality in the maritime industry.
The government’s collaboration with foreign entities was key to securing this significant milestone.
