Filipinos are being urged to conserve water, food, and power to mitigate the impact of the ongoing El Niño phenomenon.
While the government assures there are enough resources for now, officials emphasize the importance of individual action to mitigate potential shortages.
The government has initiated conservation efforts, but individuals need to contribute as well. Presidential Communications Office Assistant Secretary and Task Force El Niño Spokesperson Joey Villarama emphasized the need for “behavioral changes” such as turning off lights and appliances when not in use.
Villarama also highlighted the unpredictability of El Niño’s effects and encouraged people to prepare for the worst.
The country has already suffered damage to rice and corn crops worth P151.4 million due to the strong and mature El Niño.
Authorities are intensifying monitoring and reassessing resource supplies, including water, food, and energy, as well as public health.
