The Metro Manila Council (MMC) has approved a resolution to suspend the collection of amusement taxes for the screening of local films in Metro Manila from 2025 to 2028.
The MMC cited the financial burden imposed on local film producers as a reason for the suspension, as it could potentially impact the sustainability of the Filipino film industry.
Director Jose Javier Reyes of the Film Development Council of the Philippines highlighted the decline of the Philippine film industry due to high taxes and content piracy.
The MMC resolution will be implemented by amending the local revenue codes of each respective local government unit in Metro Manila.
The suspension of amusement taxes excludes the period of the Metro Manila Film Festival, which runs from December 25 to January 7 each year. This move aims to support and promote the Filipino film industry by alleviating the tax burden on local filmmakers.
