The Philippines has surpassed 2 million metric tons in local sugar production, the Department of Agriculture (DA) announced.
As of June 8, the country recorded a 2.015 million MT harvest, exceeding the projected 1.7 million MT and marking the highest output since 2020-2021.
DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. credited the achievement to stable sugar prices, which encouraged farmers to plant more.
The current production is nearing the country’s demand of 2.3 million MT, with the potential to reach self-sufficiency in the future.
Sugar prices have stabilized recently, with average retail prices significantly lower than the peak seen in August 2022.
