Senator Sherwin Gatchalian filed Senate Resolution No. 1317 to investigate the rising cases of love scams and online fraud, particularly those linked to banned Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs). He urged stronger enforcement of the POGO ban and closer monitoring of cryptocurrency transactions, which scammers use to launder illicit funds. The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group reported eight love scam cases in January and 72 in 2023, while Australian authorities noted 5,000 victims losing AUD 24 million. Gatchalian emphasized the need for international collaboration to track and prosecute cybercriminals across borders.
