Former President Rodrigo Duterte is now in police custody, according to Senator Bong Go, who confirmed the news at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) upon Duterte’s return from Hong Kong.
This follows reports that Interpol issued a red notice against Duterte, although the Philippine government has not publicly addressed the matter.
Go added that Duterte, who was set for a medical procedure, was transported to custody in an ambulance, and expressed uncertainty about the next steps for the former president.
The International Criminal Court is currently investigating Duterte for alleged human rights abuses related to his controversial war on drugs, which led to thousands of deaths.
Human rights organizations estimate the death toll from the campaign could be as high as 30,000, far exceeding the official government count of 6,000.
