From a 19-year-old record checker to the nation’s top investigator, retired judge Jaime Santiag,o on Monday, reflected on his decades of public service as he turned over the leadership of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to officer-in-charge Angelito Magno.
Santiago, who was appointed by President Marcos in June 2024, said he never expected to return to government service after retiring from the judiciary.
He resigned in August, citing alleged detractors with “sinister interests” in his post, but expressed pride in having led the bureau with integrity.
In his speech, Magno vowed to modernize the NBI through training, technology, and teamwork while ensuring that investigations remain free from fear or favor.
A 33-year NBI veteran, Magno began his career as a project worker in 1991.
