RESTRICTION ON FILIPINO SEAFARERS IN RED SEA-ATTACKED VESSELS IMPOSED

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced it will no longer allow Filipino seafarers to board ships attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

This decision follows attacks on the M/V Galaxy Leader, M/V True Confidence, and M/V Tutor, where most of the crew were Filipinos.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated that shipowners involved in these attacks will no longer be permitted to process Filipino seafarers for boarding.

The DMW is coordinating with maritime stakeholders to enhance risk assessments and protections for Filipino seafarers.

The department also stressed the importance of giving seafarers adequate notice when navigating high-risk zones and issued guidelines in March to ensure their safety in dangerous areas.
