Filipino chess player Daniel Quizon achieved his long-awaited Grandmaster (GM) title at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, by defeating GM Igor Efimov in a 37-move King’s Indian duel.
This victory, which also helped the Philippines secure a decisive 4-0 win over Monaco, propelled the national team closer to the top 10 standings after four rounds.
Quizon, a 20-year-old International Master from Dasmariñas, Cavite, will receive P1 million from the local government in recognition of his achievement.
His success was part of a strong performance by the Filipino team, which saw GM Julio Catalino Sadorra and IMs Pau Bersamina, and Jan Emmanuel Garcia also contributing to the team’s progress.
Meanwhile, the Philippine women’s team, led by Shania Mae Mendoza, also made significant strides with a 4-0 victory over El Salvador, moving them into a tie for 13th place among 30 countries.
