The Philippines, Japan, Australia, and the United States are set to conduct a maritime cooperative activity (MCA) within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone in the West Philippine Sea.
The exercise, involving five naval ships, aims to enhance maritime security and strengthen regional cooperation. It will include anti-submarine warfare training and tactical exercises.
Defense heads of the four countries emphasized their commitment to upholding the international order based on the rule of law and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The activity comes amid tensions in the South China Sea, with Beijing asserting its claims. Participants reiterated their adherence to international law and the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Tribunal Award.
The MCA is seen as a step toward building the Philippines’ capacity for individual and collective self-defense, emphasizing cooperation and interoperability with partner nations.
