President Marcos stated that the deliberate killing of any Filipino in the Philippines’ sovereign waters would be considered an “act of war,” prompting a response from the Philippines and its security allies.
He made this remark at the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies-Shangri-La Dialogue, referencing recent incidents where the China Coast Guard used water cannons on Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea.
Marcos condemned illegal and aggressive actions in the South China Sea and called for respect for maritime rights based on international law.
He emphasized that tensions between the U.S. and China are destabilizing Southeast Asia and urged both nations to manage their rivalry responsibly.
This statement comes amid increasing encounters and aggressive tactics by China’s coast guard in the contested waters within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
