The Philippine men’s lacrosse team settled for silver after losing 3-13 to Australia in the 2026 Asia-Pacific Men’s Lacrosse Championship final in Wellington on Jan. 11.
The Nationals had a strong start but were overwhelmed in the later periods as Australia surged offensively and stifled the Filipino defense.
The silver medal marked the Philippines’ first-ever podium finish in the continental tournament, while also securing its third consecutive berth in the 2027 World Championship in Japan.
Jayden Basalatan led the Filipinos with one goal and two assists, while Australia’s John Stubbs and Matthew Wood scored four and three goals, respectively, helping end the Aussies’ 18-year title drought.
Before the final, the Philippines swept the eliminations against China, Hong Kong, and Japan, then defeated host New Zealand 12-7 in the semifinals, while Japan and Hong Kong claimed bronze and fifth place, respectively.
