The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has removed its 45-day benefit limit rule to improve service for its members.
Acting President and CEO Edwin Mercado described the 45-day restriction as an outdated cost-containment strategy and emphasized the need for reform due to changes in payment mechanisms.
The rule previously limited hospital confinement to 45 days per year for members and their dependents, which was deemed insufficient for some medical conditions requiring longer care.
With the policy change, PhilHealth aims to provide better coverage for those with chronic conditions, severe illnesses, or extended hospital stays, ensuring they do not face financial burdens.
The agency will monitor benefit usage to ensure responsible implementation, with an emphasis on proper medical necessity and treatment plans.
