PH RECEIVES STERN WARNING FROM CHINA AFTER MARITIME INCIDENTS

China has issued a warning to the Philippines following recent confrontations in the West Philippine Sea.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed concern during a phone call with Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, stating that the relationship between the two countries is at a critical juncture.

Wang urged the Philippines to proceed with caution, emphasizing that misjudgments, independent actions, or collusion with external forces would provoke a resolute response from China to defend its rights.

Tensions have escalated between the Philippines and China due to Beijing’s increasing assertiveness in the disputed waters. Wang blamed the Philippines for changing its policies and failing to uphold previous commitments.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in an effort to counter China’s aggression, has sought closer ties with the United States and called for a “paradigm shift” in addressing the issue. In contrast, his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte, pursued a foreign policy shift towards China in exchange for investment pledges.

Both parties acknowledged the importance of dialogue to address these issues during the phone call between Manalo and his Chinese counterpart. This exchange allowed for a clearer understanding of each country’s respective positions.
