Filipino director Pedring Lopez criticized the local studio system for limiting actors’ opportunities to work on international projects.
Speaking at a media conference for his film Shadow Transit, Lopez said Philippine actors and stories have global potential but are often “contained in our own backyard.”
He stressed the need for Filipino films to appeal not just to local audiences but to viewers worldwide.
Lopez cited his 2019 action film Maria as a breakthrough that opened doors for him to work with producers in the US and Europe.
He added that while he has more fans abroad, local recognition remains limited, and he continues searching for the next Filipino female action star.
