PCG DEFENDS THE USE OF ‘THE WEST PHILIPPINE SEA’ AGAINST MARCOLETA’S CLAIMS

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela criticized senatorial candidate Rep. Rodante Marcoleta for questioning the legitimacy of the term “West Philippine Sea” (WPS), asserting that it is widely recognized and legally valid.

Tarriela emphasized that naming the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) strengthens national identity and is not illegal under Philippine law.

Marcoleta, who previously helped pass the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, recently claimed that WPS is a mere creation, sparking backlash from maritime and national security advocates.

Tarriela challenged Marcoleta’s stance, asking why Filipinos should not name their maritime territory.

Marcoleta’s remarks have drawn criticism from supporters of the Philippines’ claims under international law.
