Chavez won a narrow 3-2 split decision against Ireland’s Matthew McCole in the men’s 70kg class and is set to fight France’s Makan Traore.
However, the Philippines suffered its first loss as Kazakhstan’s Biibars Zhexen defeated Junmilardo Ogayre in the men’s 60kg category.
Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Carlo Paalam, Mark Ashley Fajardo, and Jay Bryan Baricuatro are still competing in their respective divisions.
