The historical drama “Oppenheimer,” depicting the race to build the first atomic bomb, secured the top honor for Best Movie Cast at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on February 24.
This win enhances its prospects for the upcoming Oscars. Cillian Murphy, portraying scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, was awarded Best Movie Actor, while co-star Robert Downey Jr. received Best Supporting Actor.
The Best Actress trophy went to Lily Gladstone of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” with Da’Vine Joy Randolph winning Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers.”
SAG-AFTRA’s film choices are closely observed as actors constitute the largest voting bloc for the Academy Awards. The ceremony, held after a four-month strike by SAG-AFTRA against Hollywood studios last year, acknowledged the challenges faced and the unity achieved.
The awards were streamed on Netflix for the first time, reflecting the platform’s expansion into live programming.
Additionally, a lifetime achievement honor was bestowed upon Barbra Streisand, an acclaimed figure in acting, producing, directing, singing, and writing.
