NSC SOUNDS ALARM ON FOREIGN MEDDLING RISKS AHEAD OF 2025 MIDTERM POLLS

The National Security Council (NSC) of the Philippines has raised concerns about potential foreign interference in the upcoming 2025 midterm elections.

Jonathan Malaya, NSC’s assistant director general, highlighted persistent attacks from foreign sources, as reported by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Malaya emphasized the need for preparation to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, particularly against cyberattacks, citing a pattern of foreign interference in elections worldwide.

The warning comes following accusations by the United States and its allies against China for hacking into democratic institutions. China has denied these allegations.

The NSC is collaborating with the DICT to secure election databases and transmission of results to prevent cyberattacks.

Measures are also being taken to combat fake news, disinformation, and troll farms that could influence public opinion.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) assured that preparations are underway to test and implement security measures to protect against cyberattacks, with emphasis on IT personnel readiness and stakeholder collaboration.
