The Philippine Navy has inaugurated a new forward operating base in Mahatao, Batanes, aimed at strengthening the defense of the Luzon Strait, a vital waterway between Taiwan and Luzon that links the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean.
Northern Luzon Command chief Lt. Gen. Fernyl Buca said the base will enhance maritime security and rapid response capabilities, while experts noted its strategic role in monitoring foreign incursions and serving as a contingency hub in case of conflict in the Taiwan Strait.
Security analyst Chester Cabalza stressed that Batanes, being a frontline province, is crucial in safeguarding national sovereignty against external threats.
The facility will host Navy and Marine units under the Northern Luzon Naval Command to improve maritime domain awareness in the northern frontier.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier warned that any escalation over Taiwan could inevitably draw the Philippines into a wider conflict between global powers.
