NAVAL COOPERATION IN ACTION: PH, US, AND FRANCE CONDUCT MARITIME EXERCISE

Naval vessels from the Philippines, the United States, and France have begun the multilateral maritime exercise (MME) as part of the Balikatan Exercises 2024.

Departing from Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, the ships, including the Philippine Navy’s BRP Davao del Sur and BRP Ramon Alcaraz, along with the French Navy’s Vendemiaire, were joined by the United States Navy’s USS Harpers Ferry.

This marks the first time the exercise has extended into the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea.

Various drills, including division tactics and maritime search and rescue, will be conducted until April 29 to enhance interoperability among allies and bolster Filipino troops’ capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy has noted an increase in Chinese maritime militia vessels (CMMVs) in the West Philippine Sea, reaching 110 as of April.

This development coincides with the beginning of Exercise Balikatan. Balikatan 2024 Director Maj. Gen. Marvin Licudine emphasized the consideration of Chinese ship presence in planning, emphasizing adherence to international law and freedom of navigation to maintain stability and prosperity in the region.
