The National Maritime Council (NMC) has expressed full support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s firm stance in defending the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
In a statement, the NMC emphasized that the government’s actions remain within international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
Marcos reiterated on Feb. 6 that Philippine forces would continue patrolling the country’s exclusive economic zones (EEZ) despite persistent Chinese incursions.
The statement follows reports of a China Coast Guard “monster ship” patrolling near Zambales for over a month.
Established in March 2024, the NMC aims to bolster maritime security and raise public awareness amid territorial challenges.
