Surigao del Sur Rep. Romeo Momo Sr. renewed his call for the swift passage of the Philippine Building Act (PBA) following the recent 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Cebu.
He warned that outdated building codes, last revised in the 1970s, put lives and infrastructure at risk during disasters.
The PBA seeks to update building regulations to reflect current engineering standards, hazard maps, and climate realities, including mandatory structural reviews every 15 years.
Although the bill passed the House in the previous Congress, it stalled in the Senate and needs urgent approval.
Momo emphasized that the law is crucial to ensure safer buildings and prevent future disaster damages across the country.
