The Philippines and Japan signed an exchange of notes for the fourth tranche of Japan’s loan for the Metro Manila Subway Project, totaling 220 billion yen (P84.81 billion) for Phase 1 construction.
Phase 1 will build a 27.5-kilometer subway from Valenzuela to Bicutan NAIA Terminal 3, with 17 stations, 30 train sets, and integration with the North-South Commuter Railway.
The project aims to ease traffic congestion, meet rising transport demand, and reduce air pollution in Metro Manila.
Manila and Tokyo also exchanged notes for a 1.672 billion yen (P644 million) loan for the Central Mindanao High Standard Highway, cutting travel time between Cagayan de Oro and Malaybalay from 6.5 to 3.5 hours.
Both projects are part of efforts to improve connectivity, promote economic growth, and enhance infrastructure efficiency across the country.
