President Marcos signed Republic Act 12230 on August 4, declaring Paoay Lake in Ilocos Norte a protected landscape to ensure better management and funding.
The law recognizes the lake’s rich native flora and fauna and its ecological importance.
It mandates the creation of a Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) to oversee policies and management plans for the area.
A Protected Area Management Office will handle daily operations, protection, and administration of the lake.
The law also establishes a dedicated fund to support conservation efforts, which can be supplemented by grants and donations.
