MALAYSIA CHALLENGES PHILIPPINES’ CONTINENTAL SHELF ASSERTION

Malaysia has opposed the Philippines’ submission to the UN to recognize its undersea continental shelf, claiming it is projected from Sabah’s baselines.

In a note to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Malaysia’s UN mission stated it has never recognized the Philippines’ claim to Sabah and requested the UN not to examine the submission.

Malaysia asserts that Sabah has always been an integral part of its territory since 1963, recognized by the UN and the international community.

The Philippines’ claim to Sabah, Malaysia argued, is incompatible with international law and the right to self-determination exercised by Sabah’s people in 1963.

The Philippines submitted its claim to secure its rights over the continental shelf in the South China Sea, emphasizing its sovereign rights affirmed by the 2016 South China Sea arbitration award.
