Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson praised DFA Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro for securing the safe passage of Philippine-flagged vessels, energy shipments, and Filipino seafarers through the Strait of Hormuz.
He credited Lazaro’s “quiet diplomacy” for negotiating with Iran, a key route delivering 80 to 100 percent of the country’s oil imports.
The DFA described her phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi as “very productive,” resulting in assurances of safe, unhindered, and expeditious transit.
Lazaro emphasized that the development is crucial for the Philippines’ energy security and the safety of its seafarers.
The passage comes amid soaring fuel prices caused by the US-Israel-Iran conflict, which has pushed gasoline and diesel costs in the Philippines to historically high levels.
