The Philippine Navy has increased its proposed number of “forward operating bases” (FOBs) under the Philippine Navy Archipelagic Defense Act from 15 to 28, as disclosed in a Senate hearing.
Captain Emilio Orio Jr., Naval Staff for Plans assistant chief, cited recent developments including the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept for the adjustment.
These FOBs, smaller than main naval bases, will be strategically located near the West Philippine Sea and the Philippine Rise to serve as outposts for immediate naval operations and potential sites for future expansion.
Priority locations for FOBs include Busuanga, Palawan, Subic Bay, Zambales, Mavulis Island, Batanes, and others, as identified in the bill.
The matter was further discussed by the Senate Special Committee on Philippine Maritime and Admiralty Zones in a closed session chaired by Senator Francis Tolentino.
