Impeachment prosecutors have called on the Senate to convene as a court and summon Vice President Sara Duterte earlier than scheduled, following a recent Senate hearing on the legality of former President Duterte’s arrest.
House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan, leading the prosecution team, argued that the Senate could begin proceedings earlier, despite prior indications of delays due to the congressional break.
Libanan, along with Rep. Ramon Rodrigo Gutierrez, filed a motion asking Senate President Francis Escudero to issue a summons for Duterte to respond to the impeachment complaint within 10 days.
He cited constitutional provisions that require an impeachment trial to “forthwith proceed” once a verified complaint is filed.
The complaint, filed by 215 House members, was transmitted to the Senate in February.
