The House of Representatives will not pressure the Senate to expedite Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, leaving the timeline to the upper chamber.
Senate President Francis Escudero indicated that proceedings would likely begin after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address on July 28, 2025.
Legal experts and senators, including Francis Tolentino and JV Ejercito, raised concerns over outdated impeachment rules and possible Supreme Court intervention.
Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III warned that excessive delays might violate the Constitution, suggesting a special session to address the trial.
The Senate is set to resume session on June 2, 2025, but the impeachment trial’s exact schedule remains uncertain.
