FROM POGOS TO SCAM HUBS: ILLEGAL ONLINE OPERATIONS PERSIST

An opinion article published by The Philippine Star warns that illegal online scam operations may have continued to thrive in the Philippines despite the government’s ban on Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) in late 2024.

The article cites remarks by Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan, who said some former POGO operations had evolved into scam hubs targeting victims through various forms of digital fraud.

It also highlights a recent National Bureau of Investigation operation in Olongapo City that reportedly resulted in the apprehension of around 200 Vietnamese nationals and the seizure of computers, mobile phones, and documents.

The article raises concerns about alleged money-mule networks, the use of financial accounts to move illicit proceeds, and the potential exploitation of visa-free entry arrangements by individuals involved in scam operations.

The author calls for stronger enforcement, closer cooperation among government agencies and financial institutions, and a review of policies that may be exploited by criminal networks.
