The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has identified the alias and method used by former Davao Death Squad hitman Edgar Matobato to leave the Philippines undetected.
BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval confirmed that Matobato used a new identity with a passport listing him as a gardener, enabling him to evade scrutiny at immigration checkpoints.
Matobato’s escape, aided by two Catholic priests, was revealed in a New York Times article detailing his departure to Dubai and an undisclosed final destination.
The BI is investigating whether Matobato altered his appearance to further avoid recognition.
More details will be disclosed once the findings are submitted to the proper authorities.
