Former lawmaker Carlos Zarate urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration to shift to renewable energy amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
He warned that relying on Iran’s assurances for the safe passage of Philippine-flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is not a long-term solution to the country’s energy crisis.
Zarate highlighted the Philippines’ heavy dependence on imported fuel, noting that any escalation could spike diesel prices to P170 per liter and threaten energy security.
He recommended investing in decentralized renewable projects, such as community-based mini-hydro plants and solar panels on one million rooftops nationwide.
Zarate said these measures would provide energy independence, lower electricity costs, reduce reliance on imported fuel, and create local jobs.
