Senate President Francis Escudero announced that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will start after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s third State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 21.
Escudero denied allegations of delays, stating that the impeachment court must convene during the Senate’s regular session, which resumes after the midterm elections.
The House of Representatives transmitted the impeachment complaint, signed by over 200 lawmakers, to the Senate on February 5.
Escudero also ruled out a special session, saying it is only called for urgent legislative matters, not impeachment trials.
Senators have been given copies of the 44-page complaint and are expected to review the case before the proceedings begin.
