Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile reminded social media practitioners to avoid spreading “made up or invented information,” warning that doing so could lead to a chaotic and disorderly information system.
Enrile emphasized that the right to free expression should be grounded in truthful information, enabling people to make informed decisions and not be manipulated by false facts.
His comments came after a recent House of Representatives hearing on misinformation and disinformation on social media.
During the hearing, lawmakers grilled social media personalities, including bloggers Krizette Laureta Chu, MJ Quiambao Reyes, and Mark Lopez, for making “sensationalized, baseless” claims, forcing them to apologize.
The hearing focused on the spread of “fake news,” particularly related to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial drug war.
