Eight Filipino crew members aboard the MT Krishna 1, detained in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, were released on Friday, April 18, after efforts by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed the release, emphasizing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to protect the rights of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), especially during Holy Week.
The timely release was facilitated by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia, with support from the DMW-Migrant Workers’ Office (MWO) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
The Filipino seafarers, along with 12 Indian crew members, had been detained since April 11 for alleged immigration offenses related to invalid documentation.
The DMW is now preparing for their repatriation, ensuring they receive their salaries and benefits, and assisting their families.
