The lead defense lawyer of former president Rodrigo Duterte, Nicholas Kaufman, urged Filipinos to respect the International Criminal Court (ICC), its judges, and the judicial process.
This comes after ICC social media pages and judges were targeted with negative comments and disinformation, allegedly from Duterte supporters.
Kaufman shared that Duterte, currently detained at the ICC, remains in good spirits and calls for calm and restraint before the midterm elections.
He also confirmed plans to request an interim release for Duterte, though it will depend on conditions set by the judges.
Duterte faces charges of crimes against humanity over drug war-related killings, with his legal team expected to challenge the ICC’s jurisdiction in the upcoming confirmation of charges hearing.
