The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said the Sierra Madre Mountain Range helps weaken typhoon winds in Luzon but does not provide complete protection from their destructive effects.
A 2023 study found that the range can reduce wind strength by 1 to 13 percent, particularly in northeastern Luzon, but heavy rains and flooding still cause greater damage.
The study also noted that the Cordillera Mountains have a stronger effect in reducing wind strength than the Sierra Madre.
While the range helps lower both wind and rainfall in areas like Cagayan Valley, it can increase rainfall on its western side, including Metro Manila, by 23 to 55 percent.
Researchers stressed the importance of protecting the Sierra Madre from deforestation and mining, highlighting its role in biodiversity, natural resources, and disaster mitigation.
