The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) activated a new command center in the Kalayaan Island Group on April 9 to strengthen maritime security and reinforce the country’s claim in the West Philippine Sea.
The Coast Guard District-KIG, located in Barangay Pag-asa, Palawan, was inaugurated by PCG and Department of Transportation officials during Araw ng Kagitingan.
Officials said the new district will enhance patrols, law enforcement, and support for Filipino fishermen amid ongoing tensions in the area.
It will also deploy vessels and aircraft while expanding infrastructure for operations, search and rescue, and environmental protection.
The government said the upgrade follows a directive to boost coast guard presence in strategic maritime zones and improve territorial defense.
